Flowers that make everyone happy

Flowers: they are a vital part of our natural ecosystem and have a positive effect on your health. That’s why we support flowers that make people and the environment happy. Join us on our sustainability journey: follow our progress, our findings, the bumps along the way and the challenges we face.

Moving forward together

Despite the many initiatives that have been set up, there are still enough aspects to tackle and improve. From the start, we’ve made our chain of supply as short as possible, supplying the flowers when they are at their freshest, without having many to waste and reducing our carbon footprint as much as we can. A great start, but not enough. To further maximise the sustainability of the floral sector, a lot of hard work still needs to be done. By us, and by others. That’s why we’ve made our ambitions and insights public and take our suppliers and you, our valued customer, along for the journey. Because the change is only possible if we’re all in this together.

What we are working on now

Flowers that make people and the environment happy: that’s our vision on our roadmap to sustainability. Because this journey is neverending and we’re learning along the way, our goals will develop further. We’ll share insights into what we’re doing now and the challenges we face. This will make it possible for you to help us in making the right decisions..

Happy Flowers

For many flowers, pesticides are still crucial for growing them, especially in greenhouses. But pesticides, especially when used in high dosage, can be damaging to more than just the diseases the growers want to defeat. Luckily, more environmentally friendly alternatives are available, like organic pesticides or micro-organisms. To also offer you the best flowers in the near future, we are working with our growers to offer more healthy flowers with minimum use of generic pesticides.

What we are currently doing:

  • We pay a fair price for our flowers. This helps our growers to invest in sustainable methods.
  • We test our flowers and bouquets on the use of forbidden pesticides (according to MPS standards). If we find something on a flower that shouldn’t be there, then we start a dialogue with our grower to make sure that it doesn’t happen again in the future. This way we work with our grower on a long term improvement.

Our goals:

  • With our growers, we want to offer beautiful and strong flowers, with 50% fewer pesticides by 2025.
  • We want to know the quality labels and certificates of all our flowers. By the end of 2020, we will have a complete overview. This will help us in making the right choices, now and in future, on which flowers to use that are compliant with our standards.
  • We develop our own bloomon Blacklist for pesticides which don’t comply with the MPS standards.
  • We want to participate in research- and innovation projects that are aimed at reducing the use of pesticides. Everything that we learn and discover, we will share with others in our industry.

Happy planet

Shipping flowers from warm countries or growing them locally in greenhouses: both options come with high use of energy. From 2020 we are active in reducing our carbon footprint and compensate where we cannot, yet, reduce. This has made us 100% climate-neutral. It’s our mission to further reduce our carbon footprint in the coming years and thus making compensation a smaller part of our climate strategy.

What we are currently doing:

  • We have drastically shortened our chain. Resulting in less flower waste and longer enjoyment of flowers by our customers.
  • We measure and reduce our carbon footprint. By, for example, transporting our bouquets by bike or via electric transport and by using green energy.
  • What we can’t reduce, we compensate by investing in, among others, a reforestation-project Bukaleba in Uganda via the Climate Neutral Group.

Our goal:

  • We continue making conscious and smart choices on when and where to get our flowers.
  • We continue on making our delivery routes efficient and increase the number of deliveries per bike or electric transport.

Happy people

Flowers do so much more than just brighten up a room. According to scientists, flowers make you happy and reduce stress. It’s our mission to share this flower power with everyone. For our customers but also for everyone else who needs it.

What we are currently doing:

  • Every single time, we design gorgeous creations with the very best flowers that will make you happy.

Our goal:

  • We keep on making a positive impact on people who need it most, that’s for sure. What additional goals we will choose along the way, are yet to be decided. Ideas? Do share them with us!

Happy workers

Contributing to the wellbeing of growers and employees is the foundation of our sustainability mission.

What we are currently doing:

  • We are fully committed, with our partners, to offer our production staff a pleasant and safe work environment with fair pay.
  • We are aware of the working conditions at a large part of our growers and to which certificates they comply.
  • We joined the Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI) in which we collectively with others in our industry, make sure that labourers in the sector are able to work in a responsible way.

Our Goal:

  • We validate our production staff and partners on which points we need to improve, will publish these on this page and drive this forward.
  • 100% transparency in 2020 on where all flowers are from so we know exactly the state of the working conditions at that supplier.
  • 100% certified growers in 2022 who all provide their employees with a fair pay and safe working conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are you handling the CO2-emissions?

We’ve been actively reducing our carbon footprint since 2020 and from June 15th we compensate all emissions that we can’t reduce. This makes all bloomon products 100% climate-neutral, from grower to your doorstep. We calculate the carbon footprint of each bouquet. We compensate our CO2 emission with the reforestation-project Bukaleba in Uganda via the Climate Neutral Group. Each step is certified which ensures that all our bouquets have the Climate Neutral label. It’s our mission to further reduce our carbon footprint in the coming years, making compensation a much smaller part of our overall climate strategy.
